Where have you been? Google knows...

Where have you been? Google knows...

Seth Weintraub 2010-05-31

For those who want to log their every move, Google now offers an extension to its Latitude service which logs your location history.

Google Location History is a new service announced today from Google that attempts to track your every move and save that data for your perusal.

If you are anything like me, you are thinking that this ventures way too far into my privacy. I don't want Google (GOOG) knowing everywhere I go! Pass!

But on the other hand, I really like the idea of knowing where I've been and having a record for myself. Google also entices its users with things like total distance traveled relative to the distance to the Moon. Also, if you can't remember where you went on a certain day or time...BAM...Google knows (below).

The larger Latitude product is also an example of this dichotomy. Sometimes I'd like my friends to be able to know where I am. At the same time, I don't want people to be able to find me if I'm not being social.

Google has controls on this, just like other Geo-networks, like FourSquare, have check-ins and they are likely to strike the right balance between privacy and social at some point.

I've signed up and Google is tracking me. We'll see how this affects my life.
