    China has long been the world’s largest manufacturer or solar panels, and the industry famously used low-cost government loans to expand solar panel production dramatically, causing solar prices to hit their current historic lows. That strategy also led many Chinese solar manufacturers to crash and burn.

    But now China is buying a lot of its own panels, helping give the country dominance in the global solar economy. About a third of the total solar module output (modules make up a panel) from China in 2014 went to solar panel farms installed in China, according to China’s National Energy Administration.

    Use of solar panels is growing globally. The 55 gigawatts of solar panels expected to be installed in 2015, shows growth of 36 percent over the amount installed in 2014. In 2014 there was only 2% growth from 2013, so the global market is picking up. By 2020, there will be an expected 135 gigawatts installed worldwide, says the report.

    The U.S. is expected to install 8 gigawatts of solar panels in 2015, about 14% of the total global market. Unlike in the developing markets, the U.S. is seeing a growing percentage of its solar panels being installed on the rooftops of homes and businesses.
