    现在已是福特集团副总裁的梅斯当年主导2005款野马的设计时，老款野马的销售正日益惨淡。而他的做法是，沿用20世纪60年代末的斜背式车型。有些内部人士认为，这辆车的外观实际上出自当时福特一位名叫锡德•拉姆那雷斯的工业设计师之手，但它的车身比例——长引擎盖、短后备箱——却显然是遵循了复古未来主义的设计法则。后来，梅斯喜欢自嘲说，他很高兴能别被后人看成是“那个搞砸野马的家伙”。

2005 Ford Mustang

    Sales of the original pony car were languishing when Mays, now a Ford group vice president, directed the styling of the 2005 Mustang along the lines of the fastback models from the late 1960s. Some sources attribute the actual look of the exterior to an industrial designer working at Ford named Sid Ramnarace, but the proportions -- long hood, short deck -- came straight from the retro-futuristic playbook. Afterward, Mays liked to joke that he was glad not to be remembered as "the guy who screwed up the Mustang."
