    可伸缩硬顶在半个世纪里不断改进，但还是有一些不可避免的缺点——复杂的机械构造，额外的重量，底盘性能降低，行李空间缩小，以及更高的费用。宝马3系敞篷车是首款拥有三段式可折叠铝质车顶的宝马轿车。它比绝大多数车型都更好地处理了上述问题，但也因为需要为车顶腾出空间而无法增加尾箱空间。

    Retractable hardtops improved over the intervening half-century, but still required their own compromises -- namely mechanical complexity, extra weight, reduced chassis capability, luggage capacity, and expense. The 3 Series convertible, the first BMW with a three-piece folding aluminum roof, deals with them better than most but can't hike the extra space in the rear needed for top storage.
